Newsletter 18th November 2013

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your interest in supporting Creetown Silver Band.

There are still some minor administrative items to be finalised before the ‘Friends of Creetown Silver Band’ is launched in its own right.

Since, however, we are approaching the Christmas season of engagements for the band; I thought that you might like to have a diary of events to date and a little recent news of the band. (This is accurate at the time of writing, but please see the Band website for any updates and have a look at the latest D&G Life also)

The most important news is the celebration of Stuart McNab’s thirtieth year as conductor of the band–yes you read that right -30 YEARS !!

Creetown Silver Band has gone through many highs and lows since its foundation in 1880 yet, despite two world wars and much demographic upheaval in the area, it has been sustained.

In 1983 Stuart, having recently arrived in Newton Stewart to take up a teaching post at the Douglas Ewart High School was offered the, possibly even more daunting, challenge of taking on the band!—and no matter what the situation, since then, Stuart has always been there to see the band through, whether it was just 6 players in the practice room or 26.

Stuart has worked tirelessly for the band and our community and has nurtured and educated many youngsters and adults alike and we all owe him a real debt of gratitude.

His encouragement and enthusiasm has always been superb and his loyalty and dedication to Creetown Silver Band and to brass banding in general is unsurpassed. We look forward to many more years with him at the helm.

We also owe his wife Alison our very grateful thanks for supporting him in his banding endeavours (and, we believe, allowing him to live in the band room- with occasional forays onto the golf course!)

We had the pleasure of surprisingStuart with the presentation of a fine crafted Baton and an engraved Decanter bearing his Name and the Dates and the Emblem of Creetown Silver Band.We wish him every success and no less fortitude for his next thirty years!!

Our concert at Newton Stewart Cinema in late September included a significant number of young musicians from the band, the Junior Band and from the Galloway Music Festival who must be congratulated again on their very fine performances. The concert was so successful that, in line with the educational aim of the band to promote music making among young people, we were delighted to be able to give a donation of £200 to the Galloway Music Festival for their 2014 Anniversary Season.
