A group from the junior band played in the Wigtownshire Music Festival and won the section for large ensembles, gaining more points than the other three ensembles.

The group comprised John Birse and Charlotte McDowall on 1st cornet. Tessa Syed-Tollan, Emma Hay, Nathan Syed-Tollan and Barnaby Williams on 2nd cornet. Caitlin Kerr on horn, Ben Williams on Euphonium and Cameron Fiskin on percussion.

The adjudicators complimented the group on the percussion, the tightness and reliability of the ensemble and the posture of the players.

It was very appropriate the trophy which the group won was presented by the family of Jim Owen, a band member for over 60 years, who died recently.

Caitlin Kerr went on to win the SCWS trophy for the best brass soloist in grades 1 to 3.

It should be noted that only 3 of the players have been playing at the band for more than 6 months.

The band runs a thriving junior section. The training band meets roughly one evening a month to practice for possibly two concerts in the spring.

This group comprises youngsters who receive tuition at the band plus others who are taught by the school instructor.

On Mondays and Tuesdays the band holds a learners class for youngsters and adults. tuition is given by the conductor and three other experienced band members.

This tuition is free and students are only asked to pay a band membership fee.

Similarly instruments are provided if required.
