Creetown & Sedbergh Bands Joint Concert

A link has been established between Creetown Silver Band and the Sedbergh Town Band. This started when Alan Lewis, conductor of Sedbergh bought a holiday caravan in Wigtownshire and dropped in to a Creetown rehearsal. Alan reckoned that there was some similarity between the two bands and suggested some joint event.

The Creetown band had been in the process of arranging their second Jimmy Gilmour Memorial Charity concert, and it was decided to make this a joint concert on Sunday 5th September.

Sedbergh members came to the Newton Stewart for the weekend staying in various guest house and caravans during a very busy weekend.

The Sedbergh band played at a barbeque at the Cock Inn, next to the Holiday park and then a quintet plated in the bar in the evening. Members of the Creetown band participated in both.

A full rehearsal was held on the Sunday morning and then the concert took place in Gatehouse Parish Church in the afternoon.

41 musicians took the stage and gave a performance which delighted the audience and was described in one word as “tremendous”.

The programme contained a range of music from ABBA to Gounod and from Rock and Roll to Opera. A soloist was featured from each band. Jack Norgate entertained the audience with his humorous but skilful playing of Tuba Smarties while Ally MacDonald similarly delighted the listeners with Drummer’s Delight.

After a dramatic finale, Greenwood’s variations on Eternal Father, an encore of Highland Cathedral, complete with pipes ended a superb concert.

Those who did not come to this concert probably missed one of the best ever!!!

Band AGM
The band’s AGM was held in October. It was another busy year for the band with 21 public appearances by the senior group and 6 by the junior section.

The two groups will now merge to make a larger band with the intention of inducting the juniors into the full band setup.

The committe has started a campaign to increase the overall membership of the band. Prospective players and past players of all ages are welcome and tuition will be arranged.
